really makes me wonder if dumping the exhaust gasses into a vacuum would help or hurt engine performance.

Instead of dumping exhaust gasses into a vacuum, think of applying vacuum to the exhaust portion of the cycle, pulling both the exhaust and piston upward.

I didn’t even think of that. You could use the vacuum to pull the piston up and the gasses out, then close the exhaust valve before it hits TDC, open the intake valve while the piston is still moving up and it will still pull the fuel/air mix in because the cylinder will contain a vacuum, so your cam timing could be all kinds of nuts.

Yeah, if you had good enough flow to lower the combustion chamber’s pressure below the intake side, valve overlap would let you start pulling the intake charge in. Or you could just use it on exhaust evacuation and basically have the mirror image of a turbo. Either way, it’s the ultimate in “low (negative) backpressure”.
